Health and Fitness: Arthritis and Weight Loss

The ABCs of arthritis

Understanding the basics?

Introduction

Arthritis is not a single disease. The term ?arthritis? covers more than hundred diseases and conditions affecting joints, the surrounding tissues, and other connective tissues.

Arthritis includes:

  • ???????? Osteoarthritis
  • ???????? Rheumatoid arthritis
  • ???????? Gout
  • ???????? Systemic lupus erythematosus
  • ???????? Juvenile (children) rheumatoid arthritis
  • ???????? Bursitis
  • ???????? Lyme arthritis,?
  • ???????? Carpal tunnel disease and other disorders

Osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis and the most frequent joint disorder especially in seniors. Arthritis is a common disease. As the population ages, arthritis is expected to affect an estimated 67 million adults in the United States, alone, by 2030.

Definition of arthritis

Arthritis refers to any disorder that causes ?inflammation? of the joints.

What causes arthritis?

Arthritis is due to the wearing down of cartilage, which is the material that cushions the ends of the bones. Some researchers believe that when the joints are unable to react properly to stress, the cartilage is damaged. This leads to the development of arthritis.

Who is at risk of arthritis?

Race: arthritis is less prevalent among African Americans and Hispanics than among non-Hispanic whites.

Gender: Arthritis prevalence is higher in women, 24.4%, than in men, 18.1%.

Family: Some very specific types of arthritis can result from hereditary factors. Some families may pass on the tendency for defective cartilage;

Obesity: Arthritis co-exists with other conditions such as overweight or obese individuals. Additionally, physical inactivity has been found to be higher in those with arthritis.

Diabetes: In 2005 and 2007 over half of those with diabetes had arthritis.

People at risk of injuries: Sports injuries, occupation-related injuries and repetitive use joint injuries can increase the risk of arthritis.

Signs & symptoms of arthritis - How would you know if you have arthritis?

While many people with arthritis do not experience any symptoms in the initial stages of the disease, following warning signs are mostly observed:

? ? ? -? Pain in or around a joint

????? -? Stiffness or problems moving a joint

????? -? Swelling (sometimes) in a joint

Complications (What arthritis can lead to?)

Disability: Arthritis (being mainly a disease of bones and joints) is the leading cause of disability worldwide.?

Immobility: Arthritis limits everyday activities such as walking and dressing. Of working age adults (18 to 64 years), 1 in 20 reports that arthritis affects their ability to work whereas over one-third of those with arthritis reports that their work is affected by their condition.?

Infection: Persistent presence of inflammation for long term increases the risk of buildup of bacteria and bacteria, leading to infections.

What is the treatment of arthritis?

Medical therapy: Medications for some types of arthritis, particularly rheumatoid arthritis, can limit disease progression, control symptoms and prevent serious complications. However, there are a number of limitations and drawbacks associated with the use of medications in arthritis:

????????? Not all medications are considered equally effective for every kind of arthritis.

????????? Like any other medical drugs, medicines used in the treatment of arthritis are not free of side effects especially if used for long term.?

????????? Medicines only target the effects (signs and symptoms) and often not the cause.

 Developing Modern Mobile Web Apps
patterns & practices?
Guide

This project provides guidance on building mobile web experiences using HTML5, CSS3, and JavaScript. Developing web apps for mobile browsers can be less forgiving than developing for desktop browsers. There are issues of screen size, the availability of specific feature support, and other differences between mobile browsers that will impact how you develop your apps. In addition, there are various levels of support for the emerging standards of HTML5 and CSS3, and standards for some features, such as touch, are just beginning to take shape. All of these factors suggest that it is best to keep your HTML, CSS, and JavaScript as simple as you can in order to ensure compatibility with as many devices as possible. This project illustrates how to do this, as well as how to add more advanced functionality where supported.

A Guide to Claims-Based Identity and Access Control, Second Edition
patterns & practices
Guide

Imagine a world where you don't have to worry about authentication. Imagine instead that all requests to your application already include the information you need to make access control decisions and to personalize the application for the user. In this world, your applications can trust another system component to securely provide user information, such as the user's name or email address, a manager's email address, or even a purchasing authorization limit. The user's information always arrives in the same simple format, regardless of the authentication mechanism, whether it's Microsoft? Windows? integrated authentication, forms-based authentication in a web browser, an X.509 client certificate, or something more exotic. Even if someone in charge of your company's security policy changes how users authenticate, you still get the information, and it's always in the same format. This is the utopia of claims-based identity that A Guide to Claims-Based Identity and Access Control describes.?

South Africa's Mandela to remain in hospital for Christmas

JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) - Former South African President Nelson Mandela continues to respond to treatment more than two weeks after being taken to hospital in Pretoria and will remain there for Christmas Day, the presidency said on Monday.

The 94-year-old anti-apartheid hero and Nobel Peace laureate has been treated for a lung infection and gallstones after being hospitalized on December 8.

President Jacob Zuma said in a statement that Mandela "will recover from this episode with all our support... We also humbly invite all freedom loving people around the world to pray for him."

It will be the first Christmas that Mandela has spent away from home since 1989, when he was still in prison. He was jailed for almost three decades for his role in the struggle against white minority rule.

He was released in 1990 and went on to use his prestige to push for reconciliation between whites and blacks as the bedrock of the post-apartheid "Rainbow Nation".

Mandela was elected South Africa's first black president in 1994. He stepped down five years later after one term in office and has been largely removed from public life for the last decade.

DIY Pancetta is a Nice Addition to Your Bacon Addiction

DIY Pancetta is a Nice Addition to Your Bacon AddictionPancetta is a wonderful Italian version of bacon and just like we covered earlier with bacon the best way to get high quality is to make your own.

Culinary weblog Eating Rules gives a great rundown on Italian style charcuterie including homemade pancetta. You'll need a fresh pork belly, sea salt, and a mix of spices and herbs for flavor (garlic, bay leaves, peppercorns, juniper berries, and rosemary are traditional). Mix the salt and spices well and rub them all over the pork belly. Wrap the belly in two or three layers of cling wrap and refrigerate for five days, turning so often to make sure the pork belly gets and even distribution of salt and spices. At the end of the fifth day, unwrap the pork belly and rinse off the cure using cold water.

Now you'll have basic pancetta, but if you want to intensify the flavor you'll next want to wrap it in cheesecloth and twine and hang it. Check the weight each day and when it has lost 30% of the original weight it is ready to eat. You can eat pancetta as though it were bacon, but for best results explore Italian dishes featuring the cured meat.

Gloomy predictions as Washington approaches the 'fiscal cliff'

It's still possible that the 'fiscal cliff' with its automatic?tax increases and across-the-board spending cuts can be avoided. But the clock is ticking toward Jan.1, and most lawmakers are pessimistic.

By Brad Knickerbocker,?Staff writer / December 23, 2012

President Barack Obama speaks about the fiscal cliff in the briefing room of the White House Friday before leaving for Hawaii to spend Christmas with his family.

The New Year may be more than a week off, but realistically Congress and the White House have less than that as the clock ticks toward the ?fiscal cliff? with its automatic tax increases and across-the-board spending cuts that could throw an already-weakened economy into a tailspin.

On the Sunday before Christmas, lawmakers worried and postured, with a few ? very few ? expressing just a bit of optimism that anything would be done in time.

"We can do better and we should do better," Senate Budget Committee chairman Kent Conrad said on ?Fox News Sunday.? "I would hope that we would have one last attempt here to do what everyone knows needs to be done: which is a larger plan that really does stabilize the debt and gets us moving in the right direction.?

For now, says Sen. Conrad (who?s retiring), Speaker John Boehner and the White House should ?split the difference? on the most recent offers from both sides, resulting in $1.45 trillion in spending cuts and $1.15 in revenue for a combination of $2.6 trillion.

?You couple that with the $1.1 trillion that?s already been done [in the Budget Control Act] and you?re at $3.7 trillion,? he said.

Recommended:?'Fiscal cliff' 101: 5 basic questions answered

That leaves a lot of heavy lifting, Conrad concedes: ?Is it perfect? No. Is it everything we?d hoped for? No. Does it match what Bowles-Simpson did? No.?

The general mood Sunday was well expressed by another senator about to retire, Joseph Lieberman.

"It's the first time that I feel it's more likely we'll go over the cliff than not,"?Sen. Lieberman said on CNN?s ?State of the Union.? "If we allow that to happen it will be the most colossal consequential act of congressional irresponsibility in a long time, maybe ever in American history because of the impact it'll have on almost every American.?

Joining Conrad on Fox News, Sen. Jon Barrasso, (R) of Wyoming, said tumbling off the fiscal cliff is inevitable.

?I believe the president is eager to go over the cliff for political purposes,? he said. ?He senses a victory at the bottom of the cliff.?

Obama already has scaled back his ambitions for a sweeping budget bargain. Before leaving the capital on Friday, he called for a limited measure that would extend the Bush-era tax cuts for most people and stave off federal spending cuts. The president also urged Congress to extend jobless benefits for the long-term unemployed that would otherwise be cut off for 2 million people at the end of the year.

But reverting to higher tax rates for even the wealthiest Americans remains a show-stopper for many tea party Republicans in the House of Representatives.

Judging by the latest twists in the drama ? including House Speaker John Boehner?s inability to get his own party behind his ?Plan B? ? plus public opinion polls showing Obama with a much better job rating than Boehner and the GOP seen as mostly to blame, Obama in fact may be more inclined to hang tough.

?The truth of the matter is, if we do fall off the cliff after the president is inaugurated, he?ll come back, propose just what he proposed ? and we?ll end up adopting it,? said Sen. Johnny Isakson, (R) of Georgia on Fox News. ?Why not go ahead and act now??

Why not, indeed said Sen. Amy Klobuchar, also speaking on Fox News.

"It is time to get back to the table," said the Minnesota Democrat. "And I hope if anyone sees these representatives from the House in line shopping or getting their Christmas turkey, they wish them a merry Christmas, they're civil, and then say go back to the table, not your own table, the table in Washington."

Gretchen Whitmer: A Message to NRA President Wayne LaPierre: How Dare You?

Barely more than an hour after our nation took a moment of silence on Friday to reflect on the tragic events that took place in Newtown, Connecticut, the National Rifle Association ended their organization's own silence by telling us that the mindless violence we saw is simply now a part of life. They said that it was Hollywood's fault that incidents like these happen and that the only way we can hope to keep our children safe as a result is to keep them surrounded by more and more guns.

As a mom who holds the safety and happiness of my two girls above all else, I have only one response to NRA President Wayne LaPierre: How dare you?

How dare you tell me, and millions of other moms, that the only way we can keep our kids safe is to surround them with more instruments of violence?

How dare you tell our nation that Congress is to blame for this problem when your organization's lobbying efforts have been responsible for blocking all meaningful gun control measures in recent years?

And how dare you tell our kids that the only way we know how to keep them safe is to hope someone shoots first before someone else shoots them?

We, as a people, are better than that.

We are a nation that has persevered through tragedies and triumphs alike by being brave, not by being afraid as Mr. LaPierre wants us to be. His solution to violence is to ensure more violence, his own perceived right kind of violence, but all Mr. LaPierre's solution would accomplish is ensuring our children grow up believing there is no hope to stop the violence.

As a mom, the NRA's comments offend me. As a leader in Michigan's capitol, they anger me.

What Mr. LaPierre doesn't want to acknowledge is that there are no quick or easy solutions to the violence we see in our schools and on our streets, but it is our job as leaders to challenge ourselves to find them and he simply does not want to be a part of that effort. Instead, he wants to pretend that his organization has nothing to do with the problem at hand, but would be happy to sell us the miracle cure for the right price.

It's time we put the politics aside in this discussion and agree that while guns themselves may not be the cause of what took place last week in Connecticut, we cannot pretend they had nothing to do with it either.

We must begin by enacting the common sense reforms that keep assault rifles, weapons designed for the sole purpose of mass killings, off the market and ensure that those with a history of mental illness do not have access to guns.

But we must challenge ourselves to go further and rebuild our mental health system that we've allowed to crumble over the years so that those who need our help can receive it once again. We can give those who are prone to violence care instead of indifference and hope instead of despair. And we can show the world that we, as a people, are finding the solutions necessary to make our society a less violent one for all of us to live in.

Most importantly, we must show our kids that we can be better and stronger than Mr. LaPierre wants us to be. We can show them that we can create an environment in which our schools are safe places once again not because we've locked them down, but because we've fostered a change in ourselves and our society that ensures what took place in Newtown, Connecticut never happens again.

We can be an example to our kids that even in the face of unspeakable violence, we can overcome it with the same bravery that our nation has shown throughout history.

We can succeed in this effort, but only if we have the courage and strength of character to do it. I choose to believe that we do.

USCCB, Orthodox diocese laud changes to children's online privacy ...

CWN - December 21, 2012

The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) and the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of North America have issued a joint statement supporting the Federal Trade Commission?s changes to the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act.

The changes ?require companies to get permission from parents to collect a child?s photographs, videos and geolocational information? when the child is under 13, The Washington Post reported. ?Companies such as Google and Viacom must also have a parent?s consent before using tracking tools, such as cookies, that use IP addresses and mobile device IDs to follow a child?s Web activity across multiple apps and sites.?

?We applaud the Federal Trade Commission and Chairman Jon Leibowitz for these important steps to keep children safe in the ever-evolving digital world,? said Helen Osman, the USCCB?s secretary of communications. ?The Commission is to be especially commended for setting guidelines for website operators regarding the release of children's personal information to companies and for reasonable procedures for data retention and deletion.?

Pets Dogs | Animal Emergency Hospital In Laguna Beach Warns Of ...

Saturday, December 22nd, 2012

LAGUNA BEACH, Calif., Dec. 2, 2012 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) ? With the holidays right around the corner, Laguna Beach Animal Hospital is raising awareness about potential holiday pet health emergencies. According to the hospital, one of the most common emergencies is chocolate or food poisoning in pets. Dogs can ingest chocolate candy from Halloween or onions from Thanksgiving food. Additionally, holiday decorations can also pose a potential health hazard. For pet owners seeking an animal emergency hospital, this facility is open six days a week with a veterinarian and veterinary personnel on duty to handle pet emergencies.

Laguna Beach veterinarian Dr. James A. Levin is warning pet owners about potential holiday safety hazards. From Halloween chocolate to strings of decorative lights, upcoming holidays pose seasonal pet health problems.

?The holidays are all about celebrating with family and friends,? said Dr. Levin. ?Amid all the celebration, however, it?s important that pet owners remain vigilant about animal safety.?

According to Dr. Levin, accidental chocolate ingestion is one of the leading causes for emergency pet care on Halloween. Chocolate contains theobromine, which dogs are unable to properly break down. Together with caffeine, this causes an unsafe increase in blood pressure, along with nausea and vomiting.

?Depending on the size of the dog and type of chocolate consumed, accidental chocolate ingestion can cause a pet to become very ill,? said veterinarian Dr. Lara Alkofer. ?We recommend emergency care at our animal hospital to prevent dehydration.?

In addition to chocolate, consuming onions and garlic in Thanksgiving food can also make pets ill. Dr.

Nokia And RIM Bury The Patent Hatchet, Nokia Wins Payment Award From RIM

nokia-logoPerhaps because there is not really any use in wasting energy fighting down rather than up the competition chain, today the beleaguered handset maker Nokia announced that it has settled all of its patent disputes with the equally challenged BlackBerry maker RIM. Nokia had different claims against RIM, and it looks like RIM is coming out the net loser here: Nokia says that it is getting a one-off, as well as ongoing, payments from the Canadian company. It is not making any payments to RIM. They are not disclosing the financial terms of those payments.

NRA calls for armed police officer in every school

(AP) ? Guns and police officers in all American schools are what's needed to stop the next killer "waiting in the wings," the National Rifle Association declared Friday, taking a no-retreat stance in the face of growing calls for gun control after the Connecticut shootings that claimed the lives of 26 children and school staff.

"The only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun," said Wayne LaPierre, the group's chief executive officer.

Some members of Congress who had long scoffed at gun-control proposals have begun to suggest some concessions could be made, and a fierce debate over legislation seems likely next month. President Barack Obama has demanded "real action, right now."

The nation's largest gun-rights lobby broke its weeklong silence on the shooting rampage at Sandy Hook Elementary School with a defiant presentation. The event was billed as a news conference, but NRA leaders took no questions. Twice, they were interrupted by banner-waving protesters, who were removed by security.

Some had predicted that after the slaughter of a score of elementary-school children by a man using a semi-automatic rifle, the group might soften its stance, at least slightly. Instead, LaPierre delivered a 25-minute tirade against the notion that another gun law would stop killings in a culture where children are exposed daily to violence in video games, movies and music videos. He argued that guns are the solution, not the problem.

"Before Congress reconvenes, before we engage in any lengthy debate over legislation, regulation or anything else; as soon as our kids return to school after the holiday break, we need to have every single school in America immediately deploy a protection program proven to work," LaPierre said. "And by that I mean armed security."

He said Congress should immediately appropriate funds to post an armed police officer in every school. Meanwhile, he said the NRA would develop a school emergency response program that would include volunteers from the group's 4.3 million members to help guard children.

His armed-officers idea was immediately lambasted by gun control advocates, and not even the NRA's point man on the effort seemed willing to go so far. Former Republican Rep. Asa Hutchinson of Arkansas, whom LaPierre named national director of the program, said in an interview that decisions about armed guards in schools should be made by local districts.

"I think everyone recognizes that an armed presence in schools is sometimes appropriate," Hutchinson said. "That is one option. I would never want to have a mandatory requirement for every school district to have that."

He also noted that some states would have to change their laws to allow armed guards at schools.

Hutchinson said he'll offer a plan in January that will consider other measures such as biometric entry points, patrols and consideration of school layouts to protect security.

LaPierre argued that guards need to be in place quickly because "the next Adam Lanza," the suspected shooter in Newtown, Conn., is already planning an attack on another school.

"How many more copycats are waiting in the wings for their moment of fame from a national media machine that rewards them with wall-to-wall attention and a sense of identity that they crave, while provoking others to try to make their mark?" LaPierre asked. "A dozen more killers, a hundred more? How can we possibly even guess how many, given our nation's refusal to create an active national database of the mentally ill?"

While there is a federally maintained database of the mentally ill ? people so declared by their states ? a 1997 Supreme Court ruling that states can't be required to contribute information has left significant gaps. In any case, creation of a mandatory national database probably would have had little impact on the ability of suspected shooters in four mass shootings since 2011 to get and use powerful weapons. The other people accused either stole the weapons used in the attacks or had not been ruled by courts to be "mentally defective" before the shootings.

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg said the NRA is blaming everyone but itself for a national gun crisis and is offering "a paranoid, dystopian vision of a more dangerous and violent America where everyone is armed and no place is safe."

Rep. Jerrold Nadler, D-N.Y., called the NRA's response "both ludicrous and insulting" and pointed out that armed personnel at Columbine High School and Fort Hood could not stop mass shootings. The liberal group CREDO, which organized an anti-NRA protest on Capitol Hill, called LaPierre's speech "bizarre and quite frankly paranoid."

"This must be a wake-up call even to the NRA's own members that the NRA's Washington lobbyists need to stand down and let Congress pass sensible gun control laws now," CREDO political director Becky Bond said in a statement.

The NRA's proposal would be unworkable given the huge numbers of officers needed, said the president of the International Association of Chiefs of Police, Craig Steckler.

He pointed to budget cuts and hiring freezes and noted that in his hometown of Fremont, Calif., it would take half the city's police force to post one officer at each of the city's 43 schools.

The Department of Education has counted 98,817 public schools in the United States and an additional 33,366 private schools.

Gun rights advocates on Capitol Hill had no immediate comment. They will have to walk a tough road between pressure from the powerful NRA, backed by an army of passionate supporters, and outrage over the Sandy Hook deaths that has already swayed some in Congress to adjust their public views.

A CNN/ORC poll taken this week found 52 percent of Americans favor major restrictions on guns or making all guns illegal. Forty-six percent of people questioned said government and society can take action to prevent future gun violence, up 13 percentage points from two years ago in the wake of the shooting in Tucson, Ariz., that killed six and wounded then Rep. Gabrielle Giffords.

Since the Connecticut slayings, President Obama has demanded action against U.S. gun violence and has called on the NRA to join the effort. Moving quickly after several congressional gun-rights supporters said they would consider new legislation to control firearms, the president said this week he wants proposals that he can take to Congress next month.

Obama has already asked Congress to reinstate an assault weapons ban that expired in 2004 and to pass legislation that would stop people from purchasing firearms from private sellers without background checks. Obama also has indicated he wants Congress to pursue the possibility of limiting high-capacity firearms magazines.

Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., said former President Bill Clinton called her with an offer to help get an assault weapons ban reinstated. Clinton signed such a ban into law in 1994, but it expired after 10 years.

Feinstein said she's not opposed to having armed guards at schools, but she called the NRA proposal a distraction from what she said was the real problem: "easy access to these killing machines" that are far "more powerful and lethal" than the guns that were banned under the old law.
