Third life for Jayhawks has Spanish roots (AP)

NEW YORK ? Fans of the Jayhawks who are happy the band has an unexpected third life probably don't know how much they owe to producers of the sports film "The Rookie" or Spanish music promoter David Jimenez-Zumalacarregui.

Each played key roles in the band's reformation because they made the right request at the right time.

The Minneapolis-born rock band, pioneers of what was known as the alternative country movement in the early 1990s, are an active touring unit again and have a new disc, "Mockingbird Time," released this month.

Even more than the songs, the joy of the album comes in hearing the Jayhawks luxuriate in the signature of their sound: the vocal harmonies of songwriters Gary Louris and Mark Olson. Their voices blend so well ? Louris taking the high registers and Olson the low ? that they become to Louris' ears almost like a third voice.

It's a sound many thought was lost forever in 1995 when Olson quit the band and moved to California. Years of swimming against the musical tide of the grunge era and disappointment that songs like "Blue" and "Take Me With You (When You Go)" had not become hits despite hard work and critical acclaim had taken their toll.

Unlike now, "we were playing in front of audiences who really didn't know who we were and our goal ? the whole reason for being out there ? was to try to win them over," Olson said. "That's a whole different mindset and I think it got to me after a while."

He was burned out.

"That's one of the things we're going to copyright," Louris said. "`Burning out' is one and `soldiering on' is the other."

Yes, Louris soldiered on, finding new voices, a less pastoral new sound and releasing three strong albums in the Jayhawks' second edition.

Enter "The Rookie." Producers of the 2002 film wanted to include a new Louris/Olson song and the two men agreed. The song wasn't included in the movie or soundtrack, but they enjoyed working together again. While Louris stayed with the Jayhawks, Olson had his own more acoustic band, the Creekdippers, that had more success in Europe than the United States.

By 2005, Louris was the one feeling burnt and shut the Jayhawks down. "I really felt the band was over when we sold all the gear," he said.

Louris and Olson continued working together as an acoustic duo and recorded a disc as a team. Wherever they played, they'd hear the same refrain from fans: When are you going to get the band back together?

In 2008, Jimenez-Zumalacarregui asked for the Jayhawks to play a Spanish music festival. He didn't just request the Jayhawks, he requested a specific lineup, with both Louris and Olson, bass player Marc Perlman, keyboardist Karen Grotberg and drummer Tim O'Reagan.

He braced himself for the usual excuses when a band doesn't want to work together, but he didn't get them.

"I thought it was going to be more difficult," he admitted.

Jimenez-Zumalacarregui had the standing to make such a request because Spain, largely because of his work, was one of the Jayhawks' strongest markets, and Louris had become a friend; the promoter helped him buy a home there.

The promoter laughingly appreciates his small role in rock history.

"It's something I have to show to my mother because she still doesn't know what kind of business I'm doing," Jimenez-Zumalacarregui said.

The Jayhawks kept the reunion low-key as Louris and Olson began writing songs for the new disc. At the same time, reissues of their 1990s material renewed attention in the band. Whatever the reasons ? fans passing the music around, a new generation of people discovering the old discs or fans of the second Jayhawks edition curious to see what it was like with Olson ? their audience in many cases is larger now than it was in the 1990s.

"What I'm proud of is that we didn't just go out and say, `let's play all the old hits,'" Louris said. "I don't know how bands do that."

"They had more success than us," Olson said. "They've had these huge successes so it's hard ...."

Louris: "So our lack of success..."

"Has played in our favor!" Olson answered with a laugh.

"It's not so much failure," Louris said, "but we were really a slow burn. We were really slow and steady and that doesn't go away."

The two men talked about their band at a New York restaurant where, by odd coincidence, Roger McGuinn sat at the bar. His work with the Byrds made McGuinn a patron saint of all those who fused rock, folk and country into their own sound. Louris went up to talk about guitars.

The Jayhawks' reformation is in many ways is a work in progress. Olson got more into folk music after he left the Jayhawks, sometimes much more esoteric than what the old band preferred. Louris likes to plug in his electric guitar, and Olson worries that the louder music can sometimes drown out the Jayhawks' strengths.

Louris convinced his partner that it doesn't have to be all or nothing, that there's plenty of room for what they both like.

They're also still working out how to work music from the post-Olson Jayhawks era into their sets. Olson seems hesitant here, noting that it took him about 15 performances to find a part in "Tampa to Tulsa," a Jayhawks song from 2003, and that he sometimes feels he's imposing himself on songs that worked well without him.

"There's always somebody there who isn't here anymore," Louris said to his partner. "So there's definitely room for you. The song might have been better if you were there anyway, so I encourage you to find a part."

As they get older, Louris said they both appreciate more what they have together.

"You realize it's something that doesn't come around in everybody's lifetime, having a kind of chemistry like this," he said.

(AP) ? He lived the sweet life for decades. But nobody knew he was on the run. After breaking out of a New Jersey prison 41 years ago, George Wright settled in a picturesque seaside town in Portugal.

He married a local woman, raised two children and grew old in a pretty house on a cobbled street near a stunning beach. Locals knew him as Jorge Santos, a friendly man from Africa who did odd jobs and spoke fluent Portuguese.

He kept his true identity secret: convicted murderer, prison escapee and accused hijacker.

Wright's decades-long flight from justice ended when the 68-year-old American was taken into custody by local police Monday at the request of the U.S. government. On Tuesday, he appeared before a judge in Lisbon, the capital, for an initial extradition hearing.

Residents of this charming coastal town were coming to terms Wednesday with the fact that a man they knew and liked had been living a lie.

"I never imagined George was in trouble," gas station attendant Ricardo Salvador said.

Most assumed Wright was African, not American. His Portuguese identity card said he was born in Guinea-Bissau, a former Portuguese colony in West Africa. A photocopy, shown to The Associated Press, bore the name Jose Luis Jorge dos Santos, an alias U.S. officials said Wright used. It was issued in 1993 and expired in 2004.

Salvador and other residents said Wright had business cards that gave his first name as Jorge or George, and many called him by the latter.

"He was a very nice guy," Salvador said as he took a break from pumping gas on a sunny autumn day in Almocageme, 28 miles (45 kilometers) west of Lisbon. "He used to wave as he drove past and I'd shout out, 'Hey, George!'"

In his younger years, Wright was a darker character.

He was convicted of the 1962 murder of gas station owner Walter Patterson, a decorated World War II veteran shot during a robbery at his business in Wall, New Jersey.

Eight years into his 15- to 30-year prison term, Wright and three other men escaped from the Bayside State Prison in Leesburg, New Jersey, on Aug. 19, 1970.

While on the run, the FBI said Wright joined an underground militant group, the Black Liberation Army, and lived in a communal family with several of its members in Detroit.

In 1972, Wright ? dressed as a priest and using an alias ? is accused of hijacking a Delta flight from Detroit to Miami along with four other Black Liberation Army members and three children, including Wright's companion and their 2-year-old daughter.

His capture drew reactions on both sides of the Atlantic.

Ann Patterson, daughter of the murdered New Jersey gas station owner, told the AP she wants Wright sent back quickly. "I'm so thankful that now there's justice for Daddy," she said. "He never got any kind of justice."

Rui Santos, who works at the Almocageme village council, said he was "stunned" by the news. "I'd never have thought it possible," he said outside a newsstand.

He said Wright approached him in the mid-1990s and offered to coach local kids at basketball, though the project never got off the ground.

Until his arrest, life was quiet for Wright in this hamlet of a few hundred residents, where neighbors said he lived for at least 20 years. Speaking Portuguese with a slight foreign accent, he worked at a series of odd jobs, most recently as a nightclub bouncer, said two neighbors who spoke on condition of anonymity because they feared being stigmatized for speaking out.

Wright also once had a stall at the beach and ran a barbecue chicken restaurant.

He married a Portuguese woman, identified by neighbors as 55-year-old Maria do Rosario Valente, the daughter of a retired Portuguese army officer. They had two children ? Marco and Sara, now in their early 20s ? who used their mother's last name when they registered for swim classes at the local pool.

The family lived in a neat whitewashed house with terra cotta roof tiles, a yellow door and a small front garden. At the front gate, a black mailbox in the shape of a barn carried the words "U.S. Mail." A gray VW Passat station wagon that neighbors said Wright drove was parked on the narrow dead-end street.

A woman who answered the door confirmed she was Maria do Rosario Valente and said she had no comment about the arrest.

About a mile (1.6 kilometers) away was the breathtaking Praia da Adraga beach, a sandy cove surrounded by steep rocky hillsides that has a natural rock tunnel where ocean waves blast through.

A fingerprint contained on Wright's Portuguese ID card as required by law was the break that led a U.S. fugitive task force to him, according to U.S. authorities.

Wright's capture was among the top priorities when the New York-New Jersey Fugitive Task Force was formed in 2002, according to Michael Schroeder, a spokesman for the U.S. Marshals Service, who worked with New Jersey's FBI and other agencies on the case.

"They have a national ID registry," Schroeder said of Portugal. "They pulled that. That confirmed his print matched the prints with the (Department of Corrections in New Jersey). The sketch matched the picture on his ID card."

Schroeder said the task force had been aware for at least several months of the possibility that Wright could be in Portugal. "Once the investigative group had a strong belief that George Wright might be in Portugal, we proceeded to take the next steps immediately. But those steps take time," Ward said.

Wright was being detained in Lisbon while the extradition process continued, but Portuguese police refused to release any details about the case.

U.S. Justice Department spokeswoman Laura Sweeney said she couldn't speculate on how long extradition might take.

Back in 1972, Wright and his alleged accomplices released the hijacked plane's 86 passengers in exchange for a $1 million (euro730,000 million) ransom ? delivered by an FBI agent wearing only swim trunks as ordered by the hijackers. They then forced the plane to fly to Boston, where an international navigator was taken aboard, and the plane was flown to Algeria.

The group was taken in by American activist and writer Eldridge Cleaver, who had been permitted by Algeria's socialist government to open a Black Panther Movement office in 1970. The Algerian president then professed sympathy for what he saw as worldwide liberation struggles.

At the request of the U.S. government, Algerian authorities returned the plane and the ransom to the United States. They briefly detained the hijackers before allowing them to stay. But their movements were restricted and the Algerian president ignored their requests for asylum.

Wright and the others left Algeria in late 1972 or early 1973 and settled in France, said Mikhael Ganouna, producer of a 2010 documentary about the hijacking, "Nobody Knows my Name."

Wright left the group after breaking up with a girlfriend, and no one knew where he went, Ganouna said.

Wright's associates were all eventually tracked down, arrested and tried. They were convicted in Paris in 1976, but the French government refused to extradite them to the U.S., where they would have faced longer sentences.

One of them, George Brown, lives in Paris but isn't worried about being extradited because he has already served his sentence, Ganouna said.

Over the years, the New Jersey Department of Corrections task force on fugitives reviewed reports from the 1970s, interviewed Wright's victims and the pilots of the hijacked plane, had age-enhanced sketches made of the fugitive and tracked any possible links to his family in the U.S.

An address in Portugal was one of several leads they wanted to check, but Schroeder said there was nothing special about it.

"It was another box to get checked, so to speak," he said.

That changed last week when details started falling into place with the help of Portuguese authorities.

By the weekend, U.S. authorities were on a plane to Portugal. On Monday, Portuguese police took Wright into custody.

William May, the pilot of the Detroit-Miami flight hijacked in 1972, said Wright was the group's leader.

"It's been 40 years," May said. "I'm surprised there was even any interest in finding him still."

'Smart' window to save energy

A new type of "smart" window that switches from summer to winter mode has been made by South Korean scientists.

The window darkens when the outside air temperatures soar, and becomes transparent when it gets cold in order to capture free heat from the sun.

Similar windows already exist, but the researchers say their method allows for an almost instantaneous switch from opaque to transparent.

This may help save more energy, the team writes in the journal ACS Nano.

"This type of light control system may provide a new option for saving on heating, cooling and lighting costs through managing the light transmitted into the interior of a house," said the scientists.

"Smart windows can prevent the inside of a building from becoming overheated by reflecting away a large fraction of the incident sunlight in summer.

"Alternatively, they can help keep a room warm by absorbing the sun's heat in winter."

New approach

The existing technology uses charged particles called ions sandwiched between panes of glass.

Electric current is then applied to switch the window from opaque to clear and back.

[If] you're allowing light in much quicker, this can reduce the amount of heat loss out of houses or increase the cooling in summer?

End Quote Dr Steven Morris Technology Strategy Board

But Ho Sun Lim from Korea Electronics Technology Institute, Jeong Ho Cho and Jooyong Kim from Soongsil University decided on a different approach.

They used a special polymer, a different sort of charged particles known as counterions and solvents such as methanol.

The report states that the result was a glass that was a lot cheaper to manufacture and much less toxic than those currently available on the market.

The window is able to switch from 100% opaque to almost completely clear in a matter of seconds, said the authors.

'Instantaneous' switch

Although "dimming" windows already exist, it is often necessary to switch them from winter to summer mode and back manually, using additional equipment such as home-automation panels.

"Until now, the numerous technologies developed not only have been chemically unstable, prohibiting their use in long-term switching applications but have been accompanied by the use of expensive special equipment and complicated harsh processing conditions," stated the report.

Dr Stephen Morris from Materials Knowledge Transfer Network that is funded by the UK's Technology Strategy Board said that if the new method allows the window to switch from opaque to transparent and back pretty much instantaneously, then it is going to be a real benefit in terms of energy savings.

"That would mean that you're allowing light in much quicker - and this can reduce the amount of heat loss out of houses or increase the cooling in summer," he said.

I stopped smoking 7 years back after the package on a daily basis pattern that held up a long time. I?ve also study and published a lot on the stock market and even explored it by meeting and talking with quite a few former mate-tobacco users. Even so, among all of this contradictory information there exists an advice that jewelry accurate for all folks.

Health

It might be a concept for people who smoke , to take a journey with their health care provider should they be contemplating quitting tobacco. A doctor might be able to give advice in addition to alert the client of your potential problems there may be.

The Therapy of New Behaviors

The actual quiting smoking cigarettes is that often, despite any disengagement systems, people will always feel good immediately after months existing no smoking.

So, as the tobacco user might be going through a lifestyle alter after they give up, it is a great idea to add in a further favourable change all at once to combat the losing of one other practice and disturb sensations of decline.

It may be an idea to identify a hobby which involves making use of the hands as cigarette smokers who definitely are quiting often find by themselves fidgeting and confused with how to handle them.

But an excellent passion to take up currently could be one that engaged physical exercise. Physical exercise emits endorphins into the shape that create analgesia and a sense perfectly-getting. A connection between a sense very well-being, letting go of tobacco and exercising to enhance the real body offers the ex-mate-smoke enthusiast having an really strong explanation to hold intending.

Yet again, a health care provider may be employed in regards to a new health and fitness program.

Loved ones

Individuals can be quite very important to tobacco users who would like to surrender. Those that smoke who definitely have youngsters are given a very good explanation to give up. But young families must be diligent never to strain the smoking efficianado too much into giving up as sometimes it is counter-productive.

A person tobacco user fit passport photographs of his better half and kids inside the supply of smoking so that you can restrain him in opposition to acquiring a person out.

After the time the family will certainly be a good aid device next to backslide including a cigarette smoker need to want support and service.

Aversion

A different strategy I learned about, which is a small severe, is that often one particular cigarette smoker put his cigarette smoking inherited garbage initial and left them there for a while in advance of putting them during supply. That way he could be positive he?d be embarrassed with him or her self if he decide to put one out of his mouth! That is most likely are not suggested but reveals the originality of some people who smoke when faced with the process of avoiding.

Self-self-hypnosis And Deep breathing

The easiest method to stop smoking is actually meditating privately on a daily basis and, when incredibly peaceful, internalizing affirmations to your self of health and effectively-becoming. Those that smoke really should sit silently automatically as you concentrate on their breathing in for a few minutes. Inhaling, deep breathing out. Whenever they discover their brain asking yourself, who?s will in the end do, they need to view the believed and their attention to respiration the clean air.

Once progressively more relaxed, the smoke enthusiast will like the opinion of breathing in the 100 % pure much needed oxygen which supplies lifestyle on their entire body and breathing out the air-borne pollutants. Recurring times of yoga put together with do it yourself-a hypnotic approach may result in a strain-cost-free stopping smoking period of time inside months.

Final result

Giving up smoking cigarettes doesn have to be the best tough issue on the globe as things are often regarded as. There are many those who survey having only quit eventually with no side-effects. However, one thing is perfect for confident, the body will become restoring alone right away along with the ex-tobacco smoker will glance at the rewards more and more because weeks pass by.

SHANGHAI (Reuters) ? Two subway trains collided in central Shanghai on Tuesday injuring more than 200 passengers, though none critically, prompting public anger just two months after a deadly crash between two high-speed trains.

The collision occurred in central Shanghai, near the Yu Yuan gardens, a well-known tourist attraction, after a signal failure meant staff had to direct trains by telephone, state media said.

"As far as we know, more than 260 injured people have been sent to hospital, and there are no deaths so far," an official at the Shanghai government's propaganda department said by telephone.

Ambulances rushed to the station and emergency personnel were seen carrying injured passengers out, Reuters witnesses said.

Shen Jun, 23, who was in the first coach of the train that collided at 2:51p.m. (2:51 a.m. EDT), said "blood was everywhere."

"Many people were hurt. Look at the blood on me, on my arm," pointing at patches of blood on his shirt.

The official Xinhua news agency said most of the injuries were bruises and bone fractures.

"Today is the darkest day in the history of the Shanghai Metro's operation," said a news report by Chinese internet company Sina, citing the subway operator's official microblog.

"No matter the ultimate cause and responsibility, (we feel) particularly guilty about the harm and losses borne by the public. We will put in our utmost ability to rescue the wounded, resume operations as soon as possible ... and cooperate with the relevant departments in the investigation."

"Even if our apologies pale in comparison to the actual injuries, we are deeply sorry."

However, the statement on Weibo was later removed. It was unclear why.

The accident follows a collision between two bullet trains in eastern China in July that killed 40 people, which triggered public fury at the government's perceived slow response and accusations of a cover-up, expressed via microblogging sites.

That disaster also raised question marks over technology promoted as a symbol of the nation's growing prowess.

FURY ON THE INTERNET

The Shanghai crash quickly became the most talked about topic on the wildly popular Twitter-like Sina Weibo service.

"Another accident -- what a joke. So much money has been spent, all they've built is crap," wrote "ggirl."

"It seems like we are going to have to revert to ancient times when we walked on foot and communicated with people by shouting. But at least we now have high-tech Weibo," added Zhao Yingying.

The respected Chinese magazine Caixin reported on its website that the signals used on the Shanghai subway were made by China Railway Signal & Communication Corp. -- the same company that was blamed for the faulty signals in the July crash.

Calls by Reuters to the company went unanswered on Tuesday evening.

The high-speed train crash in July reverberated into China's stock market.

Sources said in August a $5 billion listing plan by the operator of China's new Beijing-Shanghai bullet train, initially targeted for next year, will be further delayed following July's train crash.

China Railway Group, the country's largest railroad builder, said earlier this month it had dropped a plan to raise about 6.2 billion yuan via a share placement due to uncertainty over regulatory approval.

Proper Fluids for Your Vehicle ? Sterling Automotive Repair | Aurora ...

We would like to give you an update on some of the things happening in automotive fluids. You know, cars are becoming more sophisticated everyday ? and fluids such as, oil, coolant and transmission fluid are becoming more specialized at about the same pace.

The do-it-yourselfer has to be pretty careful so that they do not actually harm their vehicle with the wrong type of fluid. That is why so many Illinois car owners rely on the advice of their service consultant to not only get the correct family of fluids, but to suggest the formulation that is best for their car and the way they drive.

Let?s start with engine oil. If you have been paying attention, you will have noticed a number of new oil weights on the scene in the last several years. Modern engines are built to much tighter tolerances and have very complicated valve trains. The oil must be thin enough to lubricate complicated parts when the engine is cold. The weight of an oil is expressed in terms like 20-W-50 or 5-W-30. Manufacturers recommend the weight of oil for each vehicle they make. The recommendation is based on engine design. Your Aurora service center will know what weight your manufacturer recommends ? and it?s important to follow those recommendations. A service adviser at Sterling Automotive Repair can also offer suggestions for special formulations and can explain conventional and synthetic oils.

Antifreeze, or engine coolant, is another area that has become more complicated. For a long time, manufacturers only called for a couple of different types of coolant. Now there are several different formulations that are needed because of the different materials that manufacturers are using to build the cooling system. Using the wrong type of coolant can actually void your warranty, so you want to get that right.

Transmission fluid is beginning to be specialized as well. New transmission designs have particular requirements that mandate the use of specific formulations. Recently, new, somewhat confusing, standards for brake fluid have also been released.

Not too long ago, there was a good chance that all of the vehicles at your house would use many of the same fluids. However, as automotive technology advances, the array of basic automotive fluids you need will grow. And, some of the formulations will cost a little more. Fortunately, your Naperville service center will continue to update their training to keep pace with technology so that you?ll get the right fluids your car needs. It?s all part of the commitment your service center makes to your driving peace of mind.

Ex-Afghan leader's assassin waited days to see him (AP)

KABUL, Afghanistan ? The suicide bomber who assassinated former Afghan President Burhanuddin Rabbani insisted on meeting face-to-face with the ex-president and waited in Kabul for days to talk with him about brokering peace with the Taliban, an associate of Rabbani's said Wednesday.

Rabbani ? who headed a government council seeking a political settlement with the insurgents ? was killed Tuesday evening by a man who had claimed he was a Taliban leader wanting to reconcile with the Afghan government.

The assassination dashed hopes for reconciling with the Taliban and raised fears about deteriorating security in Afghanistan just as foreign combat troops are starting to pull out. Some U.S. and Canadian troops have left in recent months and all foreign combat forces are to go home or move into support roles by the end of 2014 when Afghan forces are to be in charge of protecting and defending the nation.

Mohammad Ismail Qasemyar, the international relations adviser for the peace council, said the bomber, identified as Esmatullah, had approached several council officials, telling them that he was an important figure in the Taliban insurgency and would only speak directly with Rabbani.

"He wanted to talk about peace with Professor Rabbani," Qasemyar said.

The appeal was passed up to President Hamid Karzai, who called Rabbani and encouraged him to meet with Esmatullah, said Ahmad Wali Masood, the brother of Ahmed Shah Masood, the resistance leader who was killed by al-Qaida in 2001.

The bomber stayed at a house used for guests of the peace council while waiting for Rabbani to return from a trip to Iran, Qasemyar said.

On Tuesday, the two met and the attacker went to shake hands with Rabbani at his home, bowing his head near the former president's chest and detonating a bomb hidden in his turban, Qasemyar said.

The U.S.-led coalition said another attacker was also involved, but that could not be confirmed by Afghan officials. A Western official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the killing is still being investigated, said one person has been detained in connection with Rabbani's death.

The street where Rabbani lived was under tight security Wednesday and those gathered outside feared another suicide attack because so many dignitaries were there paying their respects.

A black cloth, a symbol of mourning, was draped over a wall. Throughout the day, top clerics, tribal leaders, government officials, former jihadi commanders and members of Rabbani's party streamed in and out of the house as a loudspeaker broadcast readings of the Quran, the Muslim holy book.

The dignitaries included Vice President Gen. Mohammed Qasim Fahim; Abdullah Abdullah, a top opposition leader who ran against Karzai in the last election; Ismail Khan, a former warlord and current minister of water and power; and Atta Mohammed Noor, a powerful governor of Balkh province in the north. Local citizens denounced the Taliban, saying it was shameful for insurgents to kill an old man working for peace.

Neyamatullah Shahrani, a religious adviser to Karzai, said it will be difficult to replace Rabbani.

"Nobody can replace Rabbani. He belonged to all Afghans. He was serving all the Afghan people. It's too early to say how it will affect the peace efforts, but it is very difficult to replace Rabbani. He had relations with all these tribes in Afghanistan."

The Pakistani government and leaders across the world condemned the killing. U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon called Afghan President Hamid Karzai as he rushed back to Kabul from the United States.

No one has claimed responsibility for the attack, but Gen. Mohammad Ayub Salangi, police chief in Kabul, said the Taliban were behind it.

When contacted by The Associated Press, Taliban spokesmen declined to discuss the killing.

In Washington, John Kerry, the chairman of the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee, called Rabbani's assassination a "great setback" for the cause of peace and reconciliation in Afghanistan.

"Former President Rabbani was a historic figure who fought the Taliban in the 1990s and who continued to work for peace and stability as the head of the High Peace Council," Kerry said in a statement. "Afghanistan's enemies want to use his death along with other previous attacks to destabilize the region. We cannot let that happen. Too much is at stake for the people of Afghanistan and the country's future."

The Secretary General of the Jiddah-based Organization of the Islamic Cooperation, Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu, also condemned the killing.

"This ugly and cowardly terrorist act runs counter to the noble values and the teachings of Islam," he said in a statement. He appealed to all Afghans to shun violence, saying "dialogue remains the only option to resolve the conflict in Afghanistan."

Afghans at Rabbani's home blamed the Haqqani network, a militant organization based in Pakistan and affiliated with the Taliban and al-Qaida that has conducted several attacks in the capital.

And some criticized the government for failing to provide security while standing just steps away from its top officials.

"They are continuing to kill our leaders," said Rashuddin, who was a close associate of Rabbani. "How can the bombers get into Kabul? How can they get into the house close to Rabbani? There should be tight security. The Americans are saying they are for peace and security while our leaders are dying in front of our eyes."

Rabbani, whose death came just days after insurgents attacked the U.S. Embassy in Kabul, was the latest high-ranking official close to Karzai to be killed by militants in recent months. Outnumbered on the battlefield, insurgents are conducting targeted attacks against officials aligned with the Afghan government and U.S.-led coalition, lowering hopes that Afghan forces can secure the country.

"Every day they are killing," said Mirza Mohammad, a 50-year-old former Afghan Army officer from Parwan province. "The killing of Rabbani has brought chaos to Afghanistan."

Mohammad, who was among those paying respects Wednesday at Rabbani's home in Kabul, called for a national uprising. "We will soon get revenge," he said. "Pakistan is behind this attack."

Meanwhile, in the Waghaz district of eastern Ghazni province, nine Afghan policemen were killed Tuesday evening while they were trying to defuse a roadside bomb, said Gen. Zirawer Zahid, provincial police chief.

And in the south, two NATO service members were killed in an insurgent attack, the alliance said in a statement Wednesday. NATO did not provide further details.

Including the latest deaths, at least 28 international troops have been killed so far this month in Afghanistan.

Debt Relief ? How To Capitalize On ... - Personal Finance Solution

By admin |

When president Obama handed stimulus cash out many US citizens were unhappy. They suspected it was intended to help us in a falling economy and failing recession. Instead the money went to finance establishments and other enormous financial enterprises. It was perceived that his stimulus package did not truly do a thing for the economy and the American people. Though it is now apparent that it probably did help us out as far as being in debt was concerned.

In so many words the rationale why financial banks were on the verge of going under was due to bad obligations, customers just could not afford to pay their payments and it was seriously having an effect on the banks and the lending they could do. So the Obama administration lent billions of dollars to help bailout these financial establishments and help them balance their books. These financial establishments are now using this stimulus money as way to collect at least some of their credit loans. As a consumer in debt you can now be bailed out through a similar process known as debt settlement.

Visit a debt relief network web site for further information about the debt settlement firms and programs work. This way you educate yourself and you know what the method is all about. As explained above, visit the various different internet sites that offer debt settlement services and find the best one that?s suited for your wishes. Also use caution for those sites that ask for cash up front, they?re most likely scams and aren?t associated with the debt relief network at all.

It is necessary to talk with a debt advisor to work out what?s the acceptable plan of action to settle your debt. Try the link below to find legitimate and established debt relief services in your area.
